Our Speakers
Dr Matthew Russell
Dr Matthew Russell is a specialist ophthalmic microsurgeon, internationally trained retinal surgeon, medical retinal diseases specialist and cataract surgeon. Throughout a career that spans over 15 years, Dr Russell has built an impressive reputation for his treatment of retinal and macular diseases, including macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He provides surgical treatment of cataracts and refractive lens exchange, including extensive experience with toric and multifocal lens implantation.
Dr Judy Ku
Dr Judy Ku is a specialist in glaucoma, cornea and external diseases and cataract surgery. She has served as a Glaucoma Fellow at the world-renowned Singapore National Eye Centre, then as the Cornea and External Disease and Refractive Surgery Fellow at the Toronto Western Hospital. During her fellowship training, Dr Ku developed expertise in the management and surgery of primary and complex glaucoma patients (especially angle-closure glaucoma), complex cataracts, anterior segment reconstructive surgery, advanced corneal transplant surgery and collagen cross-linking for keratoconus, as well as ocular imaging.
Dr Nick Toalster
Dr Nick Toalster is an ophthalmologist with advanced training in cataract, corneal and glaucoma microsurgeries. He completed degrees in both optometry as well as medicine and surgery, both with honours, at the Queensland University of Technology and the University of Queensland, respectively. Dr Toalster trained as an ophthalmologist in Sydney and has worked from as far as rural indigenous communities in the Northern Territory to rural New South Wales and several major hospitals in Sydney and Melbourne. He then went on to complete an additional two years of subspecialty fellowships in the latest treatments for glaucoma, cornea and anterior segment disease. He returned to Queensland, his home state, to offer the latest pioneering techniques for patients.
Inez Hsing
Inez graduated from QUT in 2008 with First Class Honours and a University Medal, and completed a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics in 2013. She has worked as a Clinical Optometrist in private ophthalmology practice since 2013 and is involved in collaborative care of all ocular disease, with particular interests in glaucoma and retinal/macular disease. Inez is also active in the training of Optometry students as a Clinical Supervisor in the QUT School of Optometry’s Primary Care and Glaucoma Clinics, and is a longstanding member of the Glaucoma Australia Optometry Committee.
Dr Christopher Stewart
Dr. Stewart is a highly skilled surgeon with a specialty in oculoplastic and adnexal surgery. He is also a general ophthalmologist with a special focus on eyelid skin cancers, eyelid malposition surgery, blepharoplasty, lacrimal/watery eye surgery, and orbital surgery. With extensive training in both general ophthalmology and subspecialty fellowship training at renowned hospitals in the UK, Dr. Stewart is an examiner in Anatomy for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Furthermore, he serves as a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University and the University of Queensland, while also working as a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
Dr Sean Cheng
Dr. Cheng is a Principal Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Queensland Eye & Retina Specialists. With expertise in retina-related medical and surgical conditions, he specializes in retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal vascular disease, complex cataracts, and diabetic eye disease. In addition to providing general ophthalmology care, he also addresses issues like cataracts and ocular trauma. Dr. Cheng received his First Class Honours in Engineering from the University of Queensland before pursuing his medical training. He completed specialized ophthalmology training in Queensland and furthered his skills with two years of training in the UK. Dr. Cheng serves as a Consultant at major hospitals, a Senior Lecturer, and is dedicated to training future healthcare professionals.
Dr Phillipa Sharwood
Dr. Sharwood, an adult and pediatric ophthalmologist, specializes in general eye conditions for patients of all ages. She focuses on cataract surgery, strabismus treatment, and neuro-ophthalmology. With training from Sydney Eye Hospital and fellowships at Cambridge University Hospitals and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, Dr. Sharwood is an experienced professional. She serves as a visiting medical officer at Queensland Children's Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, an examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland.
