One of the reasons we’ve become Brisbane’s leading cataract clinic is the quality of our eye specialists. That’s why we’re delighted to introduce one of our newest ophthalmologist, Dr Eve Hsing.
Dr Hsing is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with a special interest in medical retinal conditions and general eye health. Her dual training as an optometrist and ophthalmologist gives her a well-rounded understanding of numerous conditions affecting the eye.
A rewarding career
Good eyesight is essential for maintaining independence and enjoying various activities, from reading a good book to undertaking a challenging bushwalk. Dr Hsing finds great reward in her work, spending her days treating sight-threatening diseases, performing microsurgery, administering eye injections, and helping patients recover from general eye conditions like conjunctivitis. She derives immense satisfaction from contributing to her patients’ well-being.
Professional journey
Dr Hsing originally trained as an optometrist, an allied health professional who provides vision testing and primary eye care.
During her final year of optometry training, Dr Hsing completed clinical placements in ophthalmology practices, where she developed a keen interest in the medical aspects of eye care and the effects of systemic diseases like diabetes on vision.
That newfound interest propelled her to pursue a medical degree. As a junior doctor in training, she rotated through various medical specialties gaining invaluable insights into different aspects of healthcare.
Around this time, she found herself drawn back to ophthalmology. Witnessing the profound impact her senior colleagues had on restoring their patients’ sight motivated her to specialise in ophthalmology.
Training, qualifications, and memberships
Dr Hsing’s rigorous training included five years of accredited ophthalmology practice at major tertiary hospitals for both adults and children in Queensland followed by a 12-month fellowship at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane.
Her qualifications and memberships include:
- 2004: Bachelor of Optometry, QUT
- 2008: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Griffith University
- 2018: Master of Medicine in Ophthalmic Science, University of Sydney
- 2023: Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists
- Australian Society of Ophthalmologists
International experience
Dr Hsing received a prestigious overseas Fellowship training scholarship to the Bristol Eye Hospital in the UK. This opportunity allowed her to gain invaluable experience within the UK’s distinctive healthcare system, enriching her professional expertise and broadening her perspective on patient care.
Areas of professional expertise
Dr Hsing treats conditions of the medical retina, including:
- Diabetic retinopathy, a potentially sight-threatening complication of diabetes
- PVD (posterior vitreous detachment) and floaters, a common age-related condition which is benign and retinal tears, a serious problem that requires treatment to avoid progression to retinal detachment
- Macular degeneration, which gradually blurs the central vision required for reading and driving. Macular degeneration treatment may involve a combination of lifestyle changes and injections
- CSCR (central serous chorioretinopathy), a condition in which fluid accumulates under the retina that can result in vision loss.
Dr Hsing also treats a range of general eye conditions including:
- Cataracts, a cloudy area in the lens of your eye
- Glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that can cause blindness – Dr Hsing performs minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
- Pterygium, a fleshy overgrowth of the clear surface of the eye, usually growing from the corner near the nose
- Corneal infections/keratitis, inflammation of the clear tissue in the front of the eye.
Dr Hsing prescribes anti-VEGF treatment for neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion. These medications help to stop the blood vessels in the back of your eye from bleeding and leaking.
Research and teaching
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr Hsing is actively involved in research to advance patient care. She has presented at local, national and international conferences, participated in multiple clinical trials, and published her findings in prominent optometry and ophthalmology journals.
Dr Hsing is also committed to education and has taught medical and optometry students and junior doctors in both Australia and the UK.
Personal interests
Outside of her medical practice, Dr Hsing enjoys playing the clarinet in the Queensland Medical Orchestra (QMO), an ensemble of healthcare professionals performing concerts to support various charitable causes.
Vision for the future
Dr Hsing envisions a future where eye care becomes more accessible, affordable, and advanced, with cutting-edge technology and medical advancements enabling more effective diagnosis and treatment. She advocates for a strong emphasis on preventive care and early detection, encouraging regular check-ups to protect eye health.
