Brisbane’s leading eye surgery clinic, OKKO Eye Specialist Centre, is the first Australian practice to offer a cutting-edge surgical laser procedure to improve vision for cataract patients.
A cataract is the clouding of the lens in the eye. They are the leading cause of impaired vision for Australians over 55, with surgery being the only way to treat them. 1
The CAPSULaser
Developed in the United States, CAPSULaser is a painless, non-invasive procedure that uses a laser during a critical component of the cataract procedure.2
CAPSULaser uses new intraocular lens technology designed for laser cataract surgery. The implants increase predictability and range for the patient’s visual outcomes. They are also more stable than standard cataract surgery implants.3
Leading eye surgeon and founder of Brisbane’s OKKO Eye Specialist Centre, Dr Matthew Russell, has performed more than 20,000 surgical procedures over the last 15 years. He said this was the first time Brisbane residents had access to laser technology for cataract surgery.
“We’re thrilled to introduce this innovative laser procedure to Australia. It helps us make the latest technology available to Queenslanders who need cataract surgery,” Dr Russell said.
“Until now, it hasn’t been possible for many day surgeries to afford the incredible expense that comes with the current laser technology. CAPSULaser will have incredible benefits for South-East Queensland residents. I suspect CAPSULaser will become a routine part of cataract surgery in the future. Most surgical centers across Australia will regard CAPSULaser as the preferred laser platform for cataract surgery.”
“By introducing CAPSULaser, we now offer our patients some of the latest advances in laser cataract surgery. That also includes the most recent developments in lens replacement technology. The laser offers more predictability than the human hand. The evidence so far suggests that CAPSULaser may be safer than current laser cataract surgery.4 That will need to be borne out by longer-term studies. Further, we can seamlessly integrate this state-of-the-art technology into current cataract surgery. That will end the need for a more drawn-out procedure and is more comfortable for patients.”
CAPSULaser lets surgeons perform accurate and consistent capsulotomies in less than one-third of a second. That ensures precise size, circularity, and position of the lens implant.5
The laser precision allows surgeons to pre-select the intended capsulotomy size from 4.0mm to 5.5mm in 0.1mm increments. That allows for consistent capsulotomies during every surgery.6
