What are cataracts and what are the symptoms of cataracts?

Dr Matthew Russell discusses what cataracts are and how their symptoms can impact your life.

Hi, this is Dr Matthew Russell from OKKO Eye Specialist Centre.
In this video, I’m going to tell you about cataracts and the symptoms of cataracts.

Cataract symptoms range from blurred distance vision to problems with colour vision. Signs can include visual distortion, eye strain, glare, and difficulty with driving at night. Eventually, cataracts can almost completely obstruct your vision.

By far, the most typical symptom, though, is difficulty with blurred distance vision. Patients come to me complaining they can’t see licence plates or can’t identify people they could identify before from several metres away. These are the early signs of cataract.

Some patients complain about seeing double or triple as the cataract progresses. In the long run, a cataract creates a situation where the patient is unable to function.

For example, I’ve had patients who come to me to say they cannot drive at night because of glare problems. So, this situation has curtailed their nighttime activities.

Some patients are unable to read small print or even watch television. Their vision is too blurred. That leads to shrinking their lifestyles and preventing them from doing the things that they enjoy doing. A few patients even experience eye pain and headaches from excessive eye strain from cataracts.

Fortunately, we can relieve all of these problems with one of the most common and safest procedures on the human body: modern cataract surgery.
