In this post, Dr Nick Toalster outlines what keratoconus is and the various options available to treat it.
You may be wondering what it’s like to be treated for keratoconus.
Thankfully, there are a number of new and improved options for the treatment of keratoconus.
It can be starting with something simple, like glasses or contact lenses. These days, specialist contact lenses can be fitted that provide excellent vision for patients with keratoconus.
It’s also important to keep any allergies around the eye under control, as these contribute to the worsening of keratoconus.
A number of new drops are available for the treatment of these allergies and generally have no side effects.
There are a number of options available, and these include collagen cross-linking, which is a strengthening procedure designed to stop keratoconus from getting worse.
At the extreme end of the spectrum, you may require corneal transplantation surgery. This is a specialised procedure and your surgeon will walk you through every step of the way.
