In this blog post, Dr Matthew Russell from OKKO Eye Specialist Centre is going to tell you about his training and experience.

I know that it’s not common to ask a doctor about his training and experience. But, it’s essential you know that you’re in good hands.

Take a look at my extensive training…

  • I earned my medical degree from the University of Otago in New Zealand in 1994. After graduating, I completed extensive specialist training, including three fellowships at institutions in the United States and Canada.
  • I have been a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada).
  • I undertook Post-fellowship training in lifestyle surgery (University of Sydney).
  • I have subspecialty fellowship training in Los Angeles (USA) at the highly regarded University of Southern California Doheny Eye Institute.
  • I also took Subspecialty fellowship training at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada).
  • I qualified as an ophthalmologist with The Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists’ (RANZCO) in 2002.

I’ve also had many firsts throughout my career…

  • I enjoy being an early adopter of new technologies and was one of the first surgeons to offer microincision cataract surgery when it wasn’t the mainstay of treatment.
  • I’m among the first surgeons to introduce new intraocular lens technologies and microsurgical techniques in Brisbane.
  • I was the first surgeon to use extended depth of focus multifocal implants in Brisbane.
  • I was the first surgeon internationally to use the revolutionary Zepto™ capsulotomy system during cataract surgery in combination with next-generation FEMTIS intraocular implants to enhance the precision of implant positioning.
  • I was the first surgeon in Brisbane to introduce a small-aperture intraocular lens for post LASIK presbyopia correcting cataract surgery, enhancing the postoperative depth of focus.
  • I was the first surgeon in Brisbane to implant a piggy-back small aperture implant. And, I’ve adapted ICL technology for post-cataract surgery vision enhancement.
